Located near the World Heritage Site, Shimogamo Shrine, in a shopping street, Demachi Futaba has been a long-established wagashi (Japanese sweets) shop since 1899 (Meiji 32). What strikes you first when you visit the store is the never-ending line of customers, no matter the day of the week or time of day. Although the store looks like a typical traditional sweets shop, people from all over Japan line up for its signature item, “Meidai Mame Mochi” (Azuki beans or soybeans are mixed into mochi and/or azuki sweetfilling).
While the long line may intimidate locals, it’s a treat that many don’t often get to enjoy. The balance between the sweetness of the red bean paste and the saltiness of the soybeans is exquisite, making it a Mame Daifuku that you’ll want to eat again and again.
Even if you have to wait in line, this is a Kyoto delicacy you must try at least once. The Demachi Masugata Shopping Street, where Demachi Futaba is located, is also home to other charming and delicious shops, stylish cafes, a retro cinema, and a nearby park by the Kamogawa River. It’s an area that offers an immersive experience of deep Kyoto, perfect for spending a whole day.
Demachi Futaba and the Demachi Masugata Shopping Street are just a 10-minute bike ride from the hotel, taking the Imadegawa Street almost in a straight line. Renting a bike from the hotel is a convenient option.
