Kamishichiken Street is a small, 350-meter road stretching from the east gate of Kitano Tenmangu Shrine to Imadegawa Dori Street. Here lies Kamishichiken, a historic geisha district dating back to the Muromachi period. While Gion is the more famous geisha district in Kyoto, Kamishichiken is actually older and offers a quieter, less crowded experience, making it perfect for those seeking a peaceful escape.
Kamishichiken’s origins trace back to the construction of tea houses using leftover materials from the reconstruction of Kitano Tenmangu Shrine. During the Momoyama period, it flourished thanks to the patronage of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who hosted grand tea ceremonies here, as well as its connection with the Nishijin textile industry. Today, 10 tea houses remain, with 22 geiko and maiko in residence.
Visiting Kamishichiken feels like stepping back to the Edo period. It’s just a 5-minute bike ride (or 15-minute walk) west along Imadegawa Street from Kyoto Pleasant Hotel. Bike rentals are available at the hotel for your convenience.
