Just a 3-minute walk from the hotel, Shiramine Shrine was founded by Emperor Meiji in 1868. Known as the “God of Mari(Sports ball),” the shrine is a popular spot for professional athletes in soccer, baseball, volleyball, and other sports to visit before their seasons begin, as well as for students in club activities to pray for victory before competitions.
For guests staying at our hotel, especially those involved in sports, we highly recommend visiting Shiramine Shrine for a prayer for success.
The shrine is home to a collection of official sports balls, including the ones used in the FIFA World Cup France and Japan/Korea tournaments, as well as the volleyballs from the Athens Olympics. The shrine also displays framed autographs from renowned athletes, including volleyball player Ran Takahashi, who shone at the Paris Olympics, as well as members of the Nadeshiko Japan team. Seeing these unique offerings is sure to make for an enjoyable and memorable shrine experience. You can even spot a lantern offering from FC Barcelona, which, while likely from a group of passionate fans rather than the club itself, adds a special touch to the collection.
Every year on July 7th, the Seidaimyoujin Reisai Festival, or “Tanabata Festival,” is held at the shrine. This event features performances of kemari (ancient football) and the Komachi dance, drawing many tourists and worshippers to the shrine.
